2018年9月に日本でもデリバリーが始まったi8ロードスターは、プラグインハイブリッド・スポーツだ。ふたり乗りのキャビンと、電動ソフトトップによるフルオープンボディが特徴。スムーズな走りと、なににも似ていないスタイリングは、ベースになったi8クーペが2013年に発表されていらい、いまでも変わらない魅力であると思う。【主要諸元】全長×全幅×全高：4690×1940×1290mm、ホイールベース2800mm、車両重量1650kg、乗車定員2名、エンジン1498cc直列3気筒ガソリンターボ（231ps/5800rpm、320Nm/3700rpm）＋モーター（105kW/250Nm）、6AT、駆動方式4WD、タイヤサイズ（フロント）195/50R20（リア）215/45R20、価格2276万円（OP含まず）。ショートノーズでロングデッキのミドシップ・スポーツカーのプロポーションを採用し、フロントフェンダーが前にまで回り込んだスタイルも独自だ。また、ブラックのボディに、アウター・パネルをよろいのように貼り込んだテーマはいまも斬新だ。「ストリームフロー」と呼ばれるドライバー背後のパネルは、空気の流れを表現しているようで、新しいスポーツカー像の創出に成功していると思う。i8ロードスターは、従来のi8クーペよりパワーをアップ。搭載されているリチウムイオンバッテリーの容量を13Ah（アンペア）拡大し、33Ahにした。バッテリーの容量があがったため、EVモードでの走行距離はロードスターで53km。モーターの出力は9kW（12ps）向上し、システム全体の出力は275kW（374ps）に達する。エンジンが320Nm、加えてモーターが250Nmの最大トルクを持つ。クーペより車重が60kg増しではあるものの、加速はとうぜん悪くなくて、メーカー発表の0-100km/hまで加速時間は4.6秒だ。特徴的だなぁ、と、思ったのは、加速が暴力的ではなく、あくまでも滑らかな点。ステアリングもクイックすぎず、万人向けのコントロール性のよさに重きを置いている。クーペとちがいリアのシートはない。そのかわり、室内のシート背後には100リッターの容量を有する荷物置き場が確保されている。大きなボストンバッグは無理でも、ハンドバッグなどの収納には問題ない。ツアラーとしての要件を満たしているといえる。複雑な形状のボディパネルを組み合わせたユニークなスタイリングに対抗できるのは、英国のハイパースポーツカー、乗り心地は意外なほど快適で、足まわりの設定は硬すぎず、路面のショックをていねいに吸収する。ソフトトップは50km/hまでなら走行中もごく短時間で開閉可能で、風の巻き込みは少ない。少ないけれど、それでもオープンでの爽快感はたっぷりある。少し後ろを振りかえると、クーペとは違いフェアリングが視界に入る。これがとても魅力的に思える。乗員がおさまるカーボンファイバー製のパセンジャーセルを「ライフモジュール」、メカニズムを収めている軽合金のシャシーを「ドライブモジュール」とした凝ったつくりは、コストがかかるらしい。こうした事情もあって、i8は生産終了になってしまったのかもしれない。しかも、後継モデルは今のところないから、将来、超希少モデルになっている可能性も十分ある。このなんともみごとな造形美を持つロードスターとは別れがたい。2234万円の価格はけっして安くないが、“アートピース”と考えたら、お金を出す価値は十分にありそうだ。※2014年3月31日以前更新記事内の掲載商品価格は、消費税5％時の税込価格、2014年4月１日更新記事内の掲載商品価格は、消費税抜きの本体価格となります
