A brush fire accidentally ignited by workers Tuesday afternoon posed a challenge to firefighters as it spread quickly up a steep hill on Woodruff Road in Langford.

“It’s an area of property that’s been logged and has been cleared and managed for development,” said Langford Fire Rescue Assistant Chief Lance Caven.

Langford Fire Chief Chris Aubrey said there was an "incredible amount of fuel on the ground" that allowed the fire to grow because the area had previously been logged.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Access is a little challenging and water had to be shuttled in with fire trucks, he said.

“There’s no water supply up there so we were just shuttling it in with the fire trucks.” Help was provided by the Colwood and Metchosin fire departments and the B.C.
